You will rarely see the engraving on a personalised grazing board while it is in use. Once the cheese, crackers, chutney and fruit go down, a spread covers most of a 30 × 20cm surface, and the wording turns up at the end of the evening when the board is cleared. That one fact changes how an engraved grazing board should be sized and worded, and most orders we see have not accounted for it.
Autumn is when these boards get chosen. Sunday lunches move back indoors, Bonfire Night and Halloween bring people round, and December hosting is closer than it looks. Below is what we would want to know before ordering one: how big, where the wording goes, what we make and what we don't, and how long it takes.
Choosing a personalised grazing board by guest count
Our engraved grazing board is the personalised acacia serving board. It comes in two sizes: Medium at 300 × 200mm, currently £13.99, and Large at 400 × 300mm, currently £16.99. The large board has exactly twice the surface of the medium (1,200cm² against 600cm²) for £3 more.
Medium suits two to four people: a couple of cheeses, a bunch of grapes, something to spread. Large suits six or more, or a board that has to carry a whole table's worth of food without anything sliding off the edge.
If you are undecided, the £3 difference makes large the cheaper mistake. The exception is storage. A 40 × 30cm board needs its own shelf, and a board that lives in the wrong cupboard gets used less. For someone who hosts mostly in twos and fours, medium is the better gift whatever the price gap suggests. If you are building a larger set, our guide to a personalised cheese board gift covers the knives and the pairings.
Where the wording goes on an engraved grazing board
Because food covers the middle of the board, short wording works better than long. A surname and a year. A first name and a date. One line that reads cleanly at the end of a table, rather than a paragraph that is half-hidden under a wedge of Stilton.
Acacia also complicates things. The grain varies from board to board, and the same lettering reads differently depending on whether it lands on a pale stretch or a dark band. We can't preview exactly where that will fall before cutting. The finer the lettering, the more a dark band can swallow it, so plain, short wording is the safer choice.
Personalisation is checked before production starts, and we engrave exactly what is entered. Spelling is yours to confirm. A mistake in the details supplied is not something we can refund on a personalised item, so read the surname twice.
Acacia or slate: what we make and what we don't
We don't currently make a slate grazing board. Our slate pieces are the 20 × 30cm personalised slate placemat, sold singly or in sets of 2, 4 and 6, and the 100mm slate coasters. The placemat has a sealed surface and padded feet, and it takes heat from plates and dishes, which makes it a good individual serving surface or a stand for a hot dish at the same table. It is not a substitute for a board with room for a full spread. For how slate and wood compare for charcuterie, see our piece on grazing boards and chopping boards.
How the acacia board is finished
The acacia board is finished with food-grade oil rather than a lacquer. The oil protects the grain without sealing over the engraving, so there is no coating to chip at the edges of the lettering. The trade-off is upkeep. It needs wiping clean rather than soaking, it is not dishwasher safe, and it wants re-oiling when the surface starts to look pale or dry.
What to engrave on a grazing board, by occasion
For a housewarming, a family surname and the year they moved in. For a wedding or anniversary, two first names and the date. For a host who already has everything, the name of the house, or a short line they would actually say. Each of these fits on one or two lines, which is the point.
The board is rarely the only surface on the table. Sets of the personalised slate coasters are 100mm across, and they carry the same wording at a smaller scale, so the board and the glasses read as one order rather than two. If you are adding knives, engrave the board with the full wording and keep the handles to initials. A handle is only a few centimetres of acacia, and anything longer looks crowded.
One honest limit on all of this: we engrave what you send, in the layout the product allows. We can't promise a particular position on a board whose grain we haven't seen, and we can't check the spelling of a name on your behalf. That is why we ask for the wording to be confirmed before production starts.
What goes wrong with a grazing board gift
- Cutting on the engraved face. Cured meat and hard cheese cut directly on the board score through the wording. A separate chopping board does the cutting, and the engraved board does the serving.
- Wording written for the design preview, not the finished spread. A line that looks generous on screen can sit under a pile of food on the day.
- Leaving a loaded board out overnight. Oily meat and soft cheese left to sit are what stain the grain. Clear it the same evening, wipe it, and dry it standing up so air reaches both sides.
- Putting it through the dishwasher. Heat and soaking are what lift the grain and crack the surface.
- Choosing the size from a product photo. Measure the shelf and the table before settling on 40 × 30cm.
- Ordering with wording still undecided. Production starts when the personalisation is confirmed, not when the order is placed, so a name that is still being debated delays the whole order.
Ordering for Bonfire Night and December hosting
Standard personalised orders are processed within 1 to 3 business days of the personalisation being confirmed. UK delivery then takes an estimated 2 to 4 business days after dispatch, by Royal Mail, DPD or EVRI. Nothing is processed, dispatched or delivered at weekends or on UK bank holidays. In the worst case that is seven working days from confirmed wording to your door.
For a board needed by Bonfire Night, Thursday 5 November, that means placing the order and confirming the wording by Friday 23 October. Peak season can slow carriers, and delivery times are estimates, so build in a day or two if the date matters. Tracking details are emailed at dispatch.
A board bought for December hosting works on the same arithmetic. Count back seven working days from the date you need it, then add a margin for any wording changes.
Short version
Medium for two to four, large for six or more. Keep the wording short, since the food will cover most of it. Wash by hand, dry upright, oil when it looks pale, and keep the knife work on a separate board. Allow up to seven working days from confirmed wording, and order by 23 October for Bonfire Night.
