Cheese board orders follow a pattern here. Someone buys the acacia serving board on its own in early autumn, realises a week later there's nothing to cut the cheese with, and comes back for the knife set separately. A personalised, engraved cheese board gift that actually gets used tends to start as one order: board and knives chosen and engraved together, not assembled piecemeal after the fact.

The board people keep using past the first Christmas isn't always the one they were tempted to buy. Size matters more than most buyers expect, and wording that looks generous in the design preview often reads as cramped once it's actually cut into a few centimetres of acacia. Both are easy to get right once you know what to check.

Most of these sets go out as wedding and housewarming gifts, with a smaller number ordered for corporate hospitality: a client gift that says more than a bottle of wine without trying too hard. The board carries the sentiment. The knives make it something that actually gets used rather than left in a cupboard.

Choosing the board: acacia or oak for a personalised cheese board

We sell two boards that work for a cheese course. The personalised acacia serving board comes in a medium (approx. 30 x 20cm) and a large (approx. 40 x 30cm). The personalised oak chopping board is a smaller, denser piece at 27 x 12.5cm, built for everyday chopping as well as serving. For a cheese board specifically, size should follow how often the household actually hosts, not how generous the photos look.

  • Medium acacia (30 x 20cm): suits two to four people and most weeknight cheese-and-crackers occasions. The size buyers most often underestimate wanting.
  • Large acacia (40 x 30cm): built for a proper spread of three or four cheeses, chutney, crackers, and fruit. Better for people who host regularly rather than once a year.
  • Oak chopping board (27 x 12.5cm): narrower and denser than acacia. Works well as a single-cheese board or a bread board that occasionally does cheese duty, and reads as more everyday than occasion-specific.

Acacia's grain and colour vary from board to board. That's the wood, not a defect, and no two boards come out quite the same. If you're buying to match an earlier order, or building a set across two purchases, the tone might not line up exactly.

The cheese knife set: why six knives, not one

The personalised cheese knife set comes as six knives rather than a single novelty blade, because different cheeses genuinely need different tools. A hard cheese like a mature cheddar wants a narrow, sturdy blade. A soft, spreadable cheese wants something wider and flatter that won't just push through it. Buying the six-piece set means whoever's hosting doesn't have to work out which knife goes with which cheese; that's covered before the guests arrive.

Each knife has an acacia handle engraved to match the board, with a stainless steel blade. The blades don't take engraving themselves, only the handles do, which keeps the tool functional rather than purely decorative. The set arrives in a gift box, so there's no separate wrapping needed if it's going straight to someone else.

What to engrave on a personalised cheese board and knife set

The board and the knife handles are different engraving surfaces, and they should be treated differently. A board has real surface area, so a name, a date, or a short line like "the Hendersons, since 2019" all sit comfortably. A knife handle doesn't. It's a few centimetres of acacia, and anything past a first name or a single initial starts looking cramped rather than considered.

The pairing that works best: put the fuller wording on the board and keep the knife handles to initials or one short word each. It reads as a set rather than six competing messages, and it avoids the handle engraving becoming illegible at the size it's actually cut.

Material and finish: what actually holds up under daily use

Both boards are finished with food-grade oil rather than a lacquer or varnish, which protects the wood without sealing over the engraving. That's deliberate. A sealed finish sits on top of the grain and eventually chips at the engraved edges; an oil finish lets the wood keep breathing and ages more evenly around the personalisation.

Oak and acacia behave differently under the laser. Engraving into solid oak holds its precision with age and tends to deepen very slightly rather than fade, because the grain is tight and consistent. Acacia is softer and more open-grained, so the same engraving depth can read slightly differently depending on which part of the board's natural colour variation it lands on. A name engraved over a darker patch of grain contrasts less than the same name on a lighter section, and it isn't something we can preview precisely before cutting.

Neither the boards nor the knife set are dishwasher safe. Wash by hand and dry immediately; leaving a wooden board wet is what causes warping, not the occasional wipe-down. Periodic oiling keeps the grain from drying out, particularly if the board sees regular use rather than sitting as a display piece.

Where cheese board gifts go wrong

  • Ordering the large board for someone who hosts twice a year. It looks generous in the cart and becomes the board that never quite fits the cupboard. The medium size suits most households better than buyers expect.
  • Putting the set through the dishwasher "just to be safe". One cycle is usually enough to dull the oil finish and start lifting the grain at the edges.
  • Writing a full name and date on a knife handle. It fits in the design preview and looks crowded on the actual engraved acacia. Save the longer wording for the board.
  • Ordering the board and the knife set as two separate purchases weeks apart. The acacia tone may not match closely, and it also means two deliveries instead of one gift arriving together.
  • Leaving personalisation details vague or unconfirmed. Production doesn't start until the wording is confirmed, not when the order is placed, so an unclear name spelling or a low-resolution photo upload delays the whole order.

Ordering in time

Standard personalised orders are processed within 1 to 3 business days, and that clock starts once the personalisation details are confirmed, not at checkout. After dispatch, UK delivery typically takes a further 2 to 4 business days via Royal Mail, DPD, or EVRI, depending on the service chosen. Orders aren't processed, dispatched, or delivered on weekends or UK bank holidays, so build in a full week either side of a bank holiday if the date matters. Tracking details are emailed automatically at the point of dispatch, so there's no need to chase a shipping update in the days before.

Buying the board and the knife set in the same order is the simplest way to keep the wood tone reasonably close and get both pieces dispatched together.

A cheese board gift holds together best as one order: a board sized to how the household actually hosts, knives kept to short wording, personalisation confirmed clearly before it goes into production. Start with the personalised cheese knife set, or build around the personalised acacia serving board if the board is the main gift and the knives are the addition. For a smaller everyday piece that still does cheese duty, the personalised oak chopping board is worth a look. Choose your board, then add the knife set to complete it.
